About the JSON Formatter
The JSON Formatter turns compact or messy JSON into readable, consistently indented text, and can do the reverse: minify it into a single line for transport. It also validates the input and reports syntax errors, such as a missing comma or an unquoted key, so you know what to fix.
Everything runs in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded to our server, so it is safe to use with private data. You can also open a .json file from your device; it is read locally, not uploaded.
How to use it
- Paste JSON into the input area, or open a .json file.
- Choose 2 or 4 spaces of indentation.
- Select Format now to pretty-print, Minify to compress, or Validate to check syntax only.
- Copy the result, or switch to Tree View to explore nested objects.

Tips
- JSON requires double quotes around keys and strings; single quotes are a common cause of errors.
- Trailing commas after the last item are not allowed in JSON.
- Turn on "Validate as you type" when editing by hand to catch mistakes immediately.
