About the Word Counter
The Word Counter shows live statistics as you type or paste: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time based on 200 words per minute.
Counts update instantly, which makes it easy to trim text to a limit. Everything runs in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded to our server, so it is safe to use with private data.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text into the editor.
- Read the counts in the panel; they update as you edit.
- Edit until you reach your target length.
Common uses
- Meeting word limits for essays, applications and cover letters.
- Keeping meta descriptions and social posts within character limits.
- Estimating how long an article or speech takes to read.
Tips
- Many forms count characters including spaces; use that figure when a limit is given in characters.
- Paste plain text for the most accurate counts; text copied from web pages can contain hidden line breaks.
